Hors d’oeuvres, signature old spice cocktails and live music

  • Joo Chiat, Singapore
NOSHtrekker, Alvin Yapp

Over 30-years, Alvin, a historian of Peranakan culture, has amassed an impressive collection of traditional, authentic Peranakan antiques, which he showcases at his home and private museum. Each antique tells a story of the life lived by the Chinese settlers to the Malayan Straits, and includes hand-beaded shoes and exquisite embroidery to hand-painted vases and tableware and richly inlaid wooden furniture. It is a throwback into the fashionable lifestyle of what was once Singapore’s wealthiest demographic.

Over the evening, Alvin will give introduce you to the music of times gone by. The atmosphere is punctuated with dialogue of Malay, Hokkien and English from his charming family, laughter, song and stories shared between cocktail glasses. Travel here to listen to music, cut a rug, sing a tune, eat and drink.

Accompanying the live music will be traditional Nyonya snacks. A blend of sweet and salty, you can expect to be served Peranakan treats like Ba Zhang, a bamboo leaf wrapped dumpling naturally colored with blue pea. On hand to wash down the savoury delights is an exclusive cocktail crafted by Alvin himself.

Alvin’s home and private museum is nestled among a row of heritage shophouses in the heart of Singapore’s Peranakan conservation district of Joo Chiat and Katong. The home is a 10-minute drive from the city center, and easily accessible by taxi. Don’t be fooled by its unassuming exterior. Walking into the building is to enter into a living heritage. Antiques and collectibles resume the patina of everyday objects as you are transported into a rich historical past. It is when bygone days become the present that history is most memorable.
