Reimagined Roots

Keeping a strong Peranakan Cantonese heritage alive through food

  • Bartley, Singapore
NOSHtrekker, Reimagined Roots

Mei’s mission is keeping alive the heritage of her Peranakan father and late Cantonese mother through food. As you taste the ingredients and savour the aroma of dishes, Mei’s father will share details of his life as Singapore’s first Fire Chief. He’ll describe what it felt like to control wildfires and manage the clearance of vast areas of land for the development of Singapore. You’ll hear anecdotes, see photographs and get a first-hand account of Singapore’s early days of Independence.

Food is treasured in this home and guests are treated with bursts of dried chilli served in the soul of a breezy garden. To sit at the table with her family is to experience a moment where Singapore’s past and present meet. The flavours served over this lunch suggests a generous serving of warm hospitality, mixed with a hint of nostalgia and a dash of heritage. The moment you step into their family home you immediately get the sense of their commitment to preserving the most important things in life.

Morning or Afternoon Tea, Lunch, Dinner

Family recipes from Mei's Peranakan Cantonese heritage mix with Singapore classics.

The unique décor, antiques, collectibles and beautifully tended garden set the scene for an afternoon to remember, but it is the living history of this family that makes this experience truly one of a kind. This family has a small dog.
