Plantation Table

Go back to the days of the Empire

  • Binjai Park, Singapore

Indra Rani is an author, playwright and environmentalist whose artistic pursuits range from dance, music, painting, poetry and literature. Of Ceylonese heritage with deep knowledge of the history and culture of Malaya, Indra takes guests back to the days of the Empire where rail was king and steam trains still thundered through the muggy plantations of rubber and palm.

Indra’s specialises in Jaffna cuisine. Each dish, right down to its ingredients, is prepared by hand and infused with the spices and stories from the Peninsula. The array of cocktails that she serves are inspired from the plantation days of old Malaya; gin and tonic ensembles that perfectly match the stories she will share.

From the fragrant festive Briyani (or Buriyani as it is called in the Ceylon Moors) to garden fresh cucumber salads, fried peppers and chutneys, each dish will be served to you by her helpers. All food is ornately displayed – testament to her artistic flair – and served with an equally elaborate accompanying menu that will tell you all about the history and origins of each dish.

Lunch, Dinner, Sundowners

You could be forgiven for thinking that you’ve stepped into a true tropical island resort the moment you walk into Indra Rani’s house. The sprawling complex is filled with verandas that encircle lush courtyards overflowing with flowers and water features. Museum-worthy 17th century art collections are thoughtfully incorporated into the many sitting areas scattered around the airy corridors of her house.
