Dr. J recommends some sweet and soulful tunes

Renowned jazz artist and musician; entertainer and artist; saxophonist, flutist and composer; arranger, producer, and respected musician spanning more than 25 years, Johnny James, better known as “Dr. J” has appeared with top Rap, Hip-Hop and Jazz ensembles and many of today’s contemporary artists. Once a resident of Singapore, we chat to Dr. J about food and selecting the right music to eat to.

You lived in Singapore before moving to Montreal. What is your favourite Singapore meal?

Favorite Singapore dishes would be Chilli Crab and Chicken Rice.

What do you eat when you want to be reminded of home?

A nice juicy steak (Filet Mignon).

Do you cook?

I do not cook but my wife is an excellent cook. I love her salads with homemade dressing. Also, one of my favourite meals is her Chilean Seabass with Brussel Sprouts.

What kind of music do you like listening to over a meal?

I usually like listening to instrumental jazz while having dinner. Kenny G is always nice and relaxing, also early music from John Coltrane and Miles Davis is very enjoyable too.

Tips for people who are selecting music to play for their guests at a dinner party?

My recommendation would be, find music that is relaxing and will allow you to enjoy conversation with your family or friends.

Most memorable meal?

Lobster dinner I had in Cape Breton. It was the largest and tastiest lobster I had ever eaten in my life.
