River continues his walk around Florence
River the Whippet
River is NOSHtrekker’s first canine travel reporter. Living in Florence, Italy, he has his nose close to the ground and brings us a view of Italian life that is simultaneously objective and enthusiastic, like only a whippet can. His mother, our in-house stylist Kara, has ensured that River continues to develop his Italian sensibility by allowing him to roam the cobblestone streets of their current hometown (always supervised by a parent, of course!). Send him love on Instagram at @river_thewhippet
Buongiorno amici miei,
Let’s continue on our little adventure.
On your return path to the city, enter the tranquil terraced Gardino delle Rose. The scents of the vast number of rose bushes fill your nose and the grass is especially soft under your feet. Walk back to the city through the 16th-century arch after stopping for a cappuccino and flaky pastry at Il Rifrullo in San Niccolo. There is usually a dog bowl by the front door.
Cross the Arno River at the famous Ponte Vecchio. The bridge is always jammed with people taking selfies and admiring the storefronts. At the end, turn right and walk towards the arched corridor of the Uffizi Gallery that leads into Piazza della Signoria. There is plenty to admire from the outside even without entering any of the historic buildings, but with navigating the hard streetscape, I like to rest my paws on the Persian rugs in Gucci Garden. It’s a luxuriously beautiful spot and the salespeople are friendly.
My next destination is Piazza del Duomo. On the way there, I like to rub the nose of the famous bronze boar at Piazza del Mercato Nuovo. The statue is a symbol of Tuscany and a popular photo spot. I’m told the ritual is to put a few coins in its mouth, so that you don’t get bitten, whilst making a wish to return to Florence.
Next week: Food and jazz
P.S. If you haven’t read my previous article (naughty!), you can find it here. Abbracci e baci xxx
